Dolby
Digital and DTS in Home Theater Systems
Dolby Digital and DTS (Digital Theater System) are digital systems.
Systems for Dolby Digital and DTS reproduces so called, 5.1 sound
with six discrete channels of digital information and are brought
to you on Laser Disc and DVD. The mid- and high frequencies are
mixed to five speakers (5.) like in a Pro Logic system. The main
difference is that the bass information is sent to a dedicated low-frequency
bass channel (.1). Far better bass-response is achieved in a Dolby
Dolby Digital and DTS because of this. A subwoofer is required to
reproduce the separate .1 sub channel
In Dolby Digital and DTS systems, the surround channels are in
stereo and with full frequency response, which also calls for higher
performance speakers. The surround speakers in a Dolby Digital and
DTS system should be aimed directly towards the listener since the
producer is using the rear channels more actively. The overall sound
quality is far superior in 5.1 systems with a more life like music
and movie experience!
Dolby Digital/DTS can only be played via digital hardware such
as Digital TV broadcast or DVD.
Equipment you need for a digital 5.1 system
The A/V receiver must be equipped with Dolby Digital/DTS decoder
or have a 5.1 input (if for instance the DVD is equipped with a
decoder).
If you want to be able to play DVD movies you need a DVD player.
You can also play music CD's on the DVD player.
In a Digital 5.1 system you need 6 speakers. Dolby Digital/DTS
generally require better loudspeakers that can handle 40-20.000Hz.
1 Center speaker
2 Front speakers
2 Surround speakers
1 Subwoofer
Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital are registerd trademarks
and owned by Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
