Dolby Pro Logic in Home Theater Systems

Dolby Pro Logic

Dolby Pro Logic is an analog system. It uses four channels of sound (left, center, right and surround). The movie soundtracks are mixed down (encoded) to 2-channels (stereo), in the dubbing stage, and brought to you by TV, stellite or videotapes. The 2-channel sound is brougt back again (decoded) to 4-channels in the Dolby Pro Logic receiver.

In order to reproduce Dolby Pro Logic soundtracks you need five speakers (left, center, right and two surround speakers). The sound in the surrond cannels is recorded in mono with limited frequency response. The surround channel in Dolby Pro Logic creates a sense of room and space. Surround speakers should be aimed away from the listener to avoid localization of the speakers.

Adding a subwoofer is recomended as it increases the sound quality in a Dolby Pro Logic system but is not required.

Dolby Pro Logic can be played in all kind of hardware that handles 2 channels (Stereo): TV, Video, CD, DVD, Laser Disc etc. Dolby Digital movies can be played in Dolby Pro Logic.

Equipment you need for a Dolby Pro Logic system
The A/V receiver must be equipped with Dolby Pro Logic.

If you want to be able to play DVD movies you need a DVD player. You can also play music CD's on the DVD player.

In a Dolby Pro Logic system you need 5 speakers.

1 Center speaker
2 Front speakers
2 Surround speakers
